why do people say you need to consolidate your coins if you're not investing much?

the way crypto seems to be going, with how unpredictable it is, it seems like diversifying makes more sense. if you had $500 and put $100 in each coin it seems more likely for gains than hoping on 2 coins at $250

i hear people fixed on certain prices. like "don't buy at 1.04, wait for 1.01" but why is 3, 4, even 10 cents difference a huge deal?

say i have $5,000 and i buy at 1.00 and 1.20

what's the profit difference in the 2 if that coin reaches $10?

i'm not a smart man, i know i should be able to figure this out. what sort of formula is it?
