General rule is to avoid doing drastic cleaning when the car is old and everything "settled in." For example, some advise to avoid changing transmission fluid if you didn't change it for many miles (if ever). Because when you change the fluid for the first time in a while, all the old clogged metal shavings and general gunk suddenly moves around for the first time in ages, and it ends up clogging up everything.

Just replace the old clogged parts. Don't try to clean it, "flush" it, et cetera.
