I'm a machinist. It's the family business. It was literally the last thing I ever wanted to do. I used to make a decent enough living selling on EBay, but the Bush recession and EBay's bullshit made it get to the point that it wasn't worth the trouble to me anymore. Plus I had some personal issues that basically turned my life to shit, and I just didn't have the energy or desire to continue. The problem was that I basically had a five year gap in my employment record, as being self-employed doesn't impress anyone when you're looking for a job--prior to that I'd just worked fast food.

So my grandpa offered to let me come work for him, and my uncle taught me nearly everything I know about it. I quickly realized that I love this kind of work. It's not glamorous, but it pays decently. It can be tedious and boring, but it's often mentally and physically challenging, and at the end of the day I feel like I've actually produced something useful and worthwhile--pic related.

I just wish I had of gotten into it much sooner. I'm planning on learning gunsmithing. Technically it's not much different than the sort of stuff I already do, but I need to be licensed (because prison and heavy fines don't sound appealing to me), so I need to obtain some academic credentials first. That's just a formality though.
