It depends on how good you are at trading. I go back and forth on this, usually depending on whether or not my most recent trades were profitable or losses ya know. The fact of the matter is, and this is quite conclusively proven mind you, that beating the index is very hard and few manage to do it for any length of time.

Disclaimer that I am coming off a series of horrific trades and substantial loss so I'm at max skepticism about the value of trying to beat the index.
