If they had family to watch their kid or live in with to cut their housing expense this would be a workable situation.
The real solution is Dad needs to work more hours, Mom needs to quit the job- probably quit college unless she plans on getting a real job in 4 years when their kid starts school: sell the second car and collect food assistance with their reduced 1 income household.
