What is the point of the token?

Tangle usage and ledger is PoW. No token-based transaction fees. You can send and receive a transaction of 0 tokens.

I read use cases like 'when your car passes through a toll it can pay automatically using the token' or 'interconnected solar networks can pay each other for power'. Why wouldn't they just use fiat? Or their own tethered token run on the tangle?

Genuinely befuddled. Iota as a company interact with some big players and I think they're destined for great things, but will the value of the token only ever be based on neet faggots like us passing it around one another for no reason?
