This. I used to drink the koolaid, I watched Al Gore's movie, seemed like serious business. None of the shit they said would happen within 10 years happened. Former business owner here. It's not enough to make a good product and know your business and your clients. It's not even the biggest part. The biggest part is navigating all of the regulations you have to comply with, and not succumbing to the associated regulators or to frivolous lawsuits.

I employed a tiny handful of people and had to fill out 4 tax returns per quarter, in addition to annual returns each year. W-2s, 1099s, required insurances like health insurance, workers comp, liability insurance for your business and for your premises. If you fuck any of it up, someone is waiting to punish you financially. I was subject to two utterly frivolous lawsuits and a punishment from the government for filling out one of the many forms incorrectly, in only 6 years of business. I just sold and left. Fuck em.

And your giant competitors, who you think you can beat because they are wasting all kinds of money on stupid diversity initiatives and shit? They love all this crap. It makes it impossible for upstart guys like you to have any chance of succeeding.
