Why would they? If they are sufficiently evolved to NOT have destroyed their own planet through their own version of world wars, then they're intelligent enough to value life, diplomacy, mutual self respect, and so on. The aliens-are-a-threat shit or belligerent-paranoid-fuckers-that-will-destroy-us is just dumb.
There's an equal chance stumbling upon a Mass-Effect/Star Trek like society as stumbling upon a galactic empire one that would enslave or destroy us.
Only, the latter is less likely because this would be the equivalent of those shithole communist and/or corrupt countries. Those can't even achieve anything on a regional level, let alone on a planetary level, and certainly not on a galactic level.
Only a a free society has the capacity to elevate itself to conquer the stars. As God intended. This is why first contact is far more likely to be with a benevolent society.
