I used to play Gaia Online back when their economy wasn't so fucked up. I didn't really care about the role-playing or the side games. They had a functioning market where you could buy low and sell high, diversify, long certain items and even artificially drive up prices if you were enough of a whale. Didn't spend a single IRL dollar on that website and I was in the top 10% of richest people on the site.
The actual rush came from vending AKA watching the newly listed page and sniping any good deals or mispriced items before anyone else. There was a sense of competition since you would actually see who bought a cheap item if you were too late.
Then they fucked over the economy by firing their lead economist and introduced insane hyperinflation. I'm talking inflation so bad it would collapse any real world country.
I miss it sometimes.
