maybe suffering is a privilege, in some way that isn't easy for us to grasp, locked in our three-dimensional, one-directional time-trapped minds. if you view a soul's trajectory through life as something like a plant growing,

maybe stressing the plant helps it develop differently, brings different genes to the forefront, or helps them express in a manner they wouldn't otherwise. of course, these are considerations for the gardener. the plant doesn't have much of a say in the matter, and probably isn't having a great time.

a lot of religious traditions hold that suffering has value. every religion has a mystical stream, and in every mystical spirituality there are two currents: the current of ecstasy and asceticism. two paths to union with the divine, of taking you outside yourself so that you can come closer to God.

there's someone who i trust on matters of spirituality and one time when i asked him what was the connection between suffering and prayer, he told me that suffering makes prayers stronger. suffering brings you closer to God whether you want it or not.
