Also note that institutions own ~110 million shares (something like 150 if you account for insiders, according to the FINRA report) while the share float is less than 70 million. I don't know if I'm willing to simply chalk all of this up to index funds. I'm not saying you're entirely wrong, but I do think you may be overestimating the role (largely) passively managed portfolios are playing in this.
