Because the satellites T-Mobile needs require SpaceX Starship which isn't even operational yet. Meanwhile ASTS Blue Birds can fit on a Falcon and in fact they already booked the first five rides. And what T-Mobile is planning to offer is on a tier below ASTS in terms of bandwidth. It's a glorified emergency service. AT&T, Rakuten, and Vodafone have invested lot's of many in this no name company.
