dogs have personalities. if you have two dogs who look extremely similar, you can instantly tell them apart by their behaviour. humans can even tell apart geese, ducks etc based on their personality, but dogs are some of the most personable and characteristic creatures in the world.
they are loving, they will act kind towards strangers (unless they were trained to guard) or even creatures they cannot recognize, they will help others even if it gives them nothing in return.
they can also be depressed without their owner, go sick and refuse to eat.
