some of the things that dissolve gold:
>chlorine
>bromine
>cyanide
>nitric acid
>hydrochloric acid
>a mix of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid
>any chemical process that produces nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, cyanide, chlorine, bromine, or other agent that dissolves gold
>mercury
>a few dozen other more obscure compounds.

not only will these things dissolve gold, but we've known about all of them for over 100 years now, with chlorine and cyanide being the most recent discoveries in the 1800's.
