Questions with shorts and puts and would like to have a conversation with someone knowledgable I can learn from

1) How is Ackman holding a short position for so long in Herbalife (and not passed his "Days to cover")?

2) I understand puts are a less risky version of shorting since you can at most lose the price of your premium, but can someone explain more? What are the pros and cons? Is it still difficult to find puts? I'm very ignorant about puts and calls and would like to learn more
