For gardening so long as you know what specific plant you want to get, YouTube's a pretty basic and easy resource. There's also /hgm/ on /out/, which has a ton of resources.

Soil is entirely dependent on the plant you're growing because all plants grow in different environments. You wouldn't give a coffee tree the same soil you give an avocado, they have different needs.

Some basic plants to start with that are good for beginners to get the hang of gardening include strawberries, ferns, tomatoes, and really any annual veggie that won't cost you a ton.
