The base-layer is feeless. The technology itself doesnt require transfer of any tokens (unlike all other solutions were fees are fundamentally build into the protocol). However if you pay other people to run your SC then these will want compensation. However you are ONLY paying them, not some global network, which cuts 90% of costs.

Also it enables industry to run their own internal SCs with trusted nodes that will compute without any compensation (since node owner and SC owner are the same)

Because the mainnet, although functional, is not yet fully optimized and decentralized. HUGE functionality upgrade comes in 4 weeks (Chrysalis update). There will be big performance improvements, better libraries for developers, smart contracts, NFTs, oracles and much more.

Later this year (Q4) the centralizing element, the Coordinator node, will be shut off. Coordinator-free testnet is already running. This will be done by introducing a completly new consensus algorithm (Reputation-based conflict-voting).

Biggest FUD is that the network is still centralized (address balances can not be manipulated, but the whole network can be halted), which they promise to resolve Q4. Fully decentral test-net is already public and running though, also many peer-reviewed math papers.

Second might be that 2017 IOTA Foundation was much more chaotic with this bunch of young founders not acting professionally all the time. However nowadays IOTA Foundation is a 120+ employee Germany-registered non-profit foundation, all code is public on GitHub and they delivered a lot of stuff in recent months already. Still you see salty people who got burned in 2017 crypto bubble.

No its one-coin-solves-all (the only way crypto will ever be adopted on a big scale). Data-marketplaces, smart contracts, oracles etc. all run with the same token.

Two exceptions:
Smart contracts can create "blockchains on top of the Tangle", which can have their own internal tokens.

Tokenized assets (= NFTs) are individual IOTA token which are tagged to represent something else. Like shares of a company, a building or a stable coin
