The hoatzin bird found in the Amazon basin is the only bird that are ruminants. The guts of these birds can ferment leaves. In fact, it eats a diet strictly composed of tree leaves. The hoatzin also has very little evolutionary deviation in its DNA. Such species are commonly called "living fossils". It can trace its lineage as a species to as far back as 150 million years ago when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth.
