This is important to gauge whether strategy is effective or not, get some kind of consistency to your performance. If you're trading on gut and feel you will get gut and feel random scatter performance over time.

TA is mainly used successfully to identify periods in the chart where a move in the desired direction is more likely than not to occur in short term. You may disregard all TA that purports to predict multiple price moves in future (like smelliot waves). A good TA strategy should be slightly better than random chance but it isn't have to be so by a lot. With good risk and cash management you have a good chance of beating the index even if your prediction accuracy is below 50%.

Don't expect any statistical model to predict better than that. Many have tried and all failed in frustration. The only way to really bend the market over with algos is through high frequency trading (which retail cannot do).
