What did established automakers think would happen when they gave away decades of IP just to make a few bucks in the Chinese market. China really got lucky the EV market took off when it did. They couldn't compete directly with refined internal combustion engined vehicles, but EVs lowered the floor of entry significantly. Most EVs are cheap consumer electronic slop which is China's forte, and the west will have a very hard time competing with.
