As for proficiency, how about somewhere between B2 and C1 in pic related for the language of your choice? That would mean able to hold basic conversations and having decent writing skills as well. Since you are going to be busy soon, you can take a month extra incase this retaining technique doesn't pan out exactly as you'd hoped.
