If you live in the rust belt you probably have a little more upkeep but I'm a Colorado fag and do pretty well for myself. I don't drive a whole lot though so I'm sure it varies, but I still argue that your car is a lemon if you aren't hitting standard repairs at standard intervals.

I keep a running tab of all work I have done on my shitbox. Somewhat dept ending on my major repairs (serp belt, shocks, cv boot, and (((emissions))) anyways) I figure it becomes worth it for a new car for me if I spend more than probably 3k a year on repairs. I really wanna find a v6 accord in manual but no luck so far. Yet again this could be the last car I own because "you WILL drive the self driving cuckbox"
