The answer is it could very well just go on forever if the parties engaging in that behavior are willing to spend the assload of money required to keep kicking the can, and if no legal suit is brought challenging it continuing on the basis of enough shares being direct registered to prove that there are non-existent shares being held backed by nothing other than an ever increasing payment for having failed to deliver and a promise that the share will eventually be delivered. Longs get around all of this with a merger or acquisition relying on equity issuance, which is why there's as much seethe directed at bbby holders as there is - plus the fact that shorts got cucked on a sure thing once again by the company avoiding bankruptcy and making their bond payments, similar to what happened with GME back in 2021 where they got financially reamed. Ultimately none of this actually matters and trying to understand it all will drive you insane, just know if you're holding GME you're the scorpion on the back of the frog and the folks holding BBBY are the poison in its stinger.

Pump the value of shares of a nearly dead cellarboxed company to increase their collateral because it takes laughably little money to bring an illiquid stock up fractions of a cent which work out to thousands of percent increases on potentially billions of shares?
