I highly doubt shorts can maintain their positions once the DTCC is removed from a custodial relationship with GME shares for brokers. The DTCC and the NSCC is 99% of the problem here, they allow the naked shorts and infinite FTDs to exist. If shorts had to borrow from actual shareholders they'd be wiped out immediately. I am not sure how they process withdrawals to competing depositories, if anybody could provide an example of this occurring before.
