A super currency is a hypothetical global currency, or supranational currency, that would be backed by a basket of reserve currencies at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and form the basis for a new global monetary system. The idea has attracted interest after the financial crisis, and has been promoted by China and the rest of the BRICS.

The bancor was a supranational currency that John Maynard Keynes and E. F. Schumacher conceptualised in the years 1940–1942 and which the United Kingdom proposed to introduce after World War II. The name was inspired by the French banque or ('bank gold').

Keynes lost on many key points. The result was the Bretton Woods system, named after the small town in which the conference was held. As part of the agreement, it also created what would later become the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. That served as the system of managing international trade and currencies for nearly three decades. Today the IMF and World Bank survive, but Bretton Woods was broken in 1971 when Nixon suspended the convertibility of the dollar into gold.
