I think technology is just more mainstream, allowing more normies, so exposing the internet to more dumb people.

Before social networks, the internet was lit. First wave of social networks added in some dumb dumbs, smartphones/apps opened the floodgates. The internet is no longer gated since smartphones/apps became the dominant way people access the internet. Normies may not even have a pc/laptop, but they have a smartphone with plenty of data.
