Long and short term capital gains are taxed more favorably that stocks.

60% of the gains for long term gains are taxed.
40% of the gains for short term gains are taxed.

So if you buy BTC in 2017 at $1,000, and you sell at $10,000 in 2019, you have a long term realized gain of $9,000. 60% of that is taxable.

$9,000 * 0.6 = $5,400.00 long term gains. Let's say you made less than $250,000 that year. Your long term capital gains rate is 15%.

$5,400 * 0.15 = $810

On a $9,000 profit you are liable for $810 in this situation.
