China needs a Taiwan free of American influence to be able to project power into the pacific. Otherwise it‘s cut off from the open ocean, just like the Soviet Union was during the Cold War by NATO controlling both the Bosphorus and the Danish Sound. Their only access to the sea that couldn‘t get blockaded was over the Northern Sea near Murmansk, which regularly freezes over and is a logistical nightmare to carry equipment across.

The US rely on their maritime power to play world hegemon, and they don‘t want anybody challenging them there. It‘s always been like that.
