Ok, since I did hiring for software devs I will try to explain some stuff that HR and hiring managers in my company looked at.

If you see a job posting on linkedin/indeed/etc. do NOT apply there first. Go to company website and see if there is a posting there. Apply on company website, read instructions carefully (put position in the subject, etc.).

Read the requirements and try to peace together what is going on with that company's software. What is the backend/frontend/db. Write a cover letter mentioning that you have experience with those frameworks or dbs. Since you have visited company's website you should know about there product. Mention the product and the mission in the cover letter.

Clean up you github and pin interesting and/or project with in-demand frameworks. Make good READMEs with gifs. Nobody will the code other than to see general structure, but a good readme catches the eye.

It is rough out there and the effort some devs put into their applications shows. Really good devs who think that hiring managers will drill into the code on github are delusional because managers are busy af as is. Mediocre devs who present their work in a nice way get the job.

talk to engineering newgrads and you will see that many are struggling regardless of discipline elec/mech/civ/chem/mining.

Tech is just becoming more like regular engineering. Simple as. If execs think that demand for services is going down or no new contracts would be coming in they would lay off 30% of the engineering staff without batting an eye. It's just that software engies made a huge fuss on social media when they got hit by lay offs.

To be honest, you can make good money if you stay a mechie or switch to software. Software just has fewer boomers, which was the reason why I switched
