Me (R) and my roommate (V) lived in Philadelphia, PA apartment together on a joint lease from June of last year to July of this year and then moved out. During that time, V ran into some money and job troubles, but said he was still making his share of the rent. On (maybe) 2 occasions after paying my share of the rent, I got emails from the landlord saying that our rent wasn't fully paid. I asked V about it, and each time he told me he spoke with the landlord and got it worked out, and things returned to normal so I didn't think much of it. After moving out, a little over 30 days, instead of receiving my deposit check in the mail, I get an email showing that the landlord charged a ridiculous cleaning fee (which is bad but not my main focus), and that we were behind on rent by 1 month (2 halves AKA 2 shares that I guess my roommate did not pay). These charges ate my deposit, his, and resulted in us OWING more rent to the landlord and we're both responsible for it because of the joint lease. V sends an email to the landlord with a list of his grievances and says he refuses to pay the amount, and tells me he'll be paying me back my lost deposit myself. It's been a week with no response from the landlord and I'm starting to worry. Can this affect my credit or get me blacklisted when trying to rent again? Is there a way I can get my deposit back and let V deal with this? I tried to be understanding of him but this is basically him using my deposit to skip out on rent, hope he can skip out on the rest, and expect no consequences.
