There'd have to be a very specific temperature, pressure, and fugacity that allowed the water to be injected into a vug without clogging up the fissure with crystals, but also to allow the dendrites to form without additional deposition of host rock crystals...

It seems like the physics of this could be calculated, and then gold bodies could be searched within a specific depositional band to increase the chances of finding specimens like that. Given their value it might be worth figuring out. Just one piece like that might be worth more than an entire year's production at a lot of small gold mines.
