as a company grows and enters the s&p500 youve already missed out on its explosive early years of growth and bought early investor bags, and if a company falls back down out of the s&p, your index fund will sell it at a loss to buy more AAPL, since funds are weighted by mcap
i suggest buying midcap innovators that have a proven product but just need to refine it and grow a customer base for your growth positions, and buy large established dividend payers for passive income, based on their dividend yield and PE, sometimes selling when theres a better (but safe) yield opportunity at current prices
