The only caveat I would suggest is that you don't get overextended such that you are forced to sell metals to cover expenses. Other than that, DCA at a sustainable level is a great long-term strategy. And the alternatives all suck.

Interesting chart. When you are dealing with commodities subject to unpredictable uncertainties in production - like agriculture - having a futures market helps to stabilize prices. But you can see how it became a casino where people gamble on fluctuations that have nothing to do with the production of goods. Very telling.

It depends on what you mean by "ruins the coin". A coin with numismatic value - meaning value to a collector due to rarity rather than value due to its metal content - very well may lose value if cleaned in any detectable way. But the value of bullion, in bar or round form, and common "junk" silver will not be reduced by cleaning. The baking soda method is particularly mild. Some folks will argue that cleaning any coin in any way ruins it. But they are just projecting their numismatic autism onto junk coinage.
