For most of Japanese history, they had a semi-barter economy. I say "semi" because rice was used to some extent as a currency. Some Chinese coins circulated, but not widely. Then the Tokugawa started minting coins of silver and bronze. But the content was not maintained in a stable way AND many of the daimyo warlords issued their own. So the currency situation was a terrible mess. With the Meiji restoration in 1868 things got better, but there were still problems with circulating bank notes, some pure fiat and some tied to silver or eventually gold. They finally got around to a full gold standard, following the LMU model, but a century of war dethroned it.

I feel sorry for Japan being under the American thumb. I hope they can shake it off when the American empire finally eats it.

I eat them daily. But I'm a pussy so I eat the boneless skinless ones from Trader Joe's. I mash 'em up with avocado mayo and mustard.
