Programming is lonely and non-programmers don't understand the hard, complicated work that goes into it. There's a BIG difference between good programming and bad programming and most of the time the end result is the same, nobody will notice the difference.

Explain to someone that you've built a house and he'll be impressed since he can understand it. Explain that you've built an app or whatever and he just think you're playing around in front of your computer. You'll get zero respect even though you might have spent the same number of years perfecting your craft as it takes to become a surgeon.
