They fear two things:
They fear death itself. These people have so much power but they can't stop themselves from dying. Its making them spiteful. They've also failed to fulfill their dreams of true world domination (although they are extremely close, its just not going to happen before they die). Their successors are not as competent and are perfectly happy with the status quo. Many of them have fallen into the trap of luxury and their own degeneracy.
They fear what MIGHT come after death. No matter how many times they sit their convincing themselves that death is the end of existence, they can't help but be afraid. Imagine living such wicked lives, wouldn't you be terrified?
And then, to top it off, every year more and more people wake up to their ways.

Just hang on cause the ride is going to get crazy before it gets better. And yes this applies to stocks as well. Stocks are a reflection of the human psyche, even when inflation has calmed down I expect the volatility to continue because of world events.
