You need to take some risks if you want to make money investing. That said, an S&P 500 index fund is not the riskiest investment you could buy. Low risk funds are not a bad idea if your risk tolerance is low (as it seems) - but if your investment horizon is long you might want to take an equities-heavy position.

One of the biggest return killers you're going to face on those funds you are buying is the expense ratio. You can replicate that 2055 fund by buying stock and bond indices and re-balancing once a year.
