The creative ones pay for the tv as normal with cash, then leave. Then they will take out the tv, fill the box with old rugs or whatever they have on hand, tape it up really nice so it looks unopened, return it because it was the wrong size or whatever, saying they never opened it, and get their cash back.
If they want a steeply discounted tv they put the tv on the scale and ring it as some common fruit, pay for the fake fruit purchase, and leave with a massively discounted tv.
When they want straight free stuff they just run out with the items or swap them into other boxes (small items like shoes usually).
Self check out has actually encouraged theft in my opinion.
