One way you can avoid massive premiums and still have fun is by buying all the different 1oz silver coins from the big mints. Collect them like Pokémon cards almost, get an ASE, get a Chinese panda, get all those Perth mint animals... a lot of them only go for a little bit over spot, too. Also, Austrian Philharmonics look lovely and are the cheapest new 1oz silver coins around at least where I am.

Also, Constitutional silver is fucking awesome. Not so cheap anymore sadly, but still close-ish to spot, Ron Paul sheds a manly tear when you buy some and Kennedy smiles down on you from heaven, you can fuck around with them in a way you can't with new coins because they're already gnarled and old, they look like pirate treasure, they're a piece of American history. ALSO newly minted 1/10oz of silver pieces are ridiculously expensive, while old silver dimes are really affordable.
