That creek I'm referring to is in central Illinois, it has nice catfish and while they're not a delicacy it harbors enormous freshwater clams (mussels) with shells over 7" long that I've always thought were really cool. There are viable easily accessible exposures of coal all around the Midwest, study the relevant USGS maps and historical coal production data for your counties of interest and you'll find lots of options.
