it doesn't have to be depressing if you actually have a good job, money in the bank. and do it for cleanliness, simplicity. peace of mind, lack of clutter.
especially if the few things you do have are of high quality, pleasing and actually have useful practical purpose.
also since i'm in an apartment, it's by default a temporary rental living situation, so the more things i accumulate the more i have to pack, transport, store, move, unpack, when i leave the apt.
if i settle into a permanent home someday, then I will relax and allow myself to accumulate more furnishings and such. no sense in accumulating all that shit while living as a nomad
