>Sorry remind me again, the net spread is 0.20 delta, but still directional, and is a credit?
No the overall spread, be it debit or credit is has separate functions. If you're net short on a given options position the lower the delta the better. So if a credit spread has a net delta of 0.2 then it's a OTM trade with a higher probability of success. Remember when selling options you want them to go worthless hence why that's a thing.

That said credit spreads are inherently directional, either working when things go sideways or going hard in one direction.
So a Put Credit Spread is bullish but can work if the stock/index goes sideways for a time. That said there are other kinds of spreads one can do which give more interesting P/L charts. For example I implore you to look up a short put condor since it's profitable wherever the stock is price wise, only downside is when it moves sideways.

>Do you avoid trading specific days (eg NFPs, FOMC, CPI)?
With what I do I just need movement so it doesn't matter all that much as long as it's not crabbing in my valley of death.
>Why do you look at net delta rather than stdev/area under the curve?
Deltas when selling options are a simple way to gauge the likelihood of profit. So lower deltas are safer positions and more likely to go the way you want.
As for stdev and areas, to be honest I've seen disconnect here with how useful that actually is in practice. Prime example has been this year to be honest or high volatility environments on the indexes. Things bounce around so much where it's just noise data wise.

Honestly in that case I'd say ditch the guy if possible but have a viable trade plan with some data backing it before you jump the gun.
That said if you're more for a slow and steady kind of method then just spamming Poor Mans Covered Calls/Puts might be your method if you have time to kill.
That said too the Wheel is also good but I would even go further here and look at the various SPY off shoots given the premium can be more.
