I was never bad even at the start, unless you have a blind hatebonner for the design changes. I'm quite surprised at how faithful it is, they're not rushing anything, and at the pace it's going on, it will end up close with the numbers of episodes of the original (a bit less though, but for the better, it's better paced). Both Kenichi Suzumura and Mamoru Miyano do a convincing work as Yang and Reinhard respectively. Norio fucking Wakamoto is cruelly missing, but what can you do, he's irreplaceable. Biggest downpoint unfortunately is the music, we get some symphonic tracks like the in the original, but it's too sporadic and only reserved for the biggest battles. Other than that, it's the same pleasure as always to see the commentary describing both that republican system and the dictatorship system, with their pros and cons, and how a single person can affect them tremendously.
