Not sure why poor people aren't doing this. Why would you hold meager amounts of gold, with only the hope that it will increase in value. Even a 2x is unlikely unless your thinking in decades. If you want risky highly speculative gains, bitcoin and the shitcoins are a better buy. If you are already rich and want to secure your wealth against inflation and have stability, then gold is the better proposition.

Imagine being a Goldbug. Imagine accurately predicting the collapse of Fiat and western economy because of fake pumping of price and impossible economic practices. Imagine understanding everything and why an objective store of value will balance it all out. And because of that you buy Gold. For 30 or 40 years. You buy, even though the returns are not great. You could have made more money investing in stocks, real estate, P2P cash, bonds or anything. But you didn't, because you knew eventually everyone will lose everything and you'll stand among the ashes. Heck you sometimes even lost money because Gold couldn't beat inflation.
And now comes the day. You see it inching closer and closer. It's happening, you can almost feel the entire economy collapsing right into your hands and then... a bunch of Nerds invent an imaginary Internet coin and all the wealth shift you expected to go to you goes to them instead. They inherit the world and everything that would go to you and they didn't sacrifice a thing. Didn't miss any opportunities, haven't wasted their lifes, heck most of them aren't even in their 20s yet! How is this possible? This can't be real.
