Calmness thread

All things given to man will be taken away from man. The material cannot provide long-lasting peace, only as instruments of the affairs of this world. Do not mistake means for ends. Seek inner peace, because gold can be taken away, but the love you find within will lift your spirits in this life and the next.

Te-shan was sitting outside doing zazen. Lung-t’an asked him why he didn’t go back home. Te-shan answered, “Because it’s dark.”

Lung-t’an then lit a candle and handed it to him. As Te-shan was about to take it, Lung-t’an blew it out. Te-shan had a sudden realization, and bowed.

Why is there such Death Bias? Why is DEATH bad and LIFE is good? They are two facets of the same whole. From death comes life and vice versa. The great natural whole exists in harmony and we are a piece of the greater harmony of the universe. If you weep over death, it shows you have not accepted its inevitable part of living. The suffering has stemmed from your own attachment. /biz/ was always temporary and your clinging has only brought pain to you.
