Have some miscellaneous questions on how clearinghouses work, if anyone happens to know.

I understand the function that clearinghouses play in a transaction (acting as a middleman so that both sides uphold their end of the transaction), but I'm trying to understand how that looks in practice. Some brokers have their own clearing houses (Charles Schwab, Wells Fargo, etc), but exchanges also have clearinghouses (NYSE, CME, etc). How do these various clearinghouses interact with each other, if at all? If I trade on a Wells Fargo account using their clearinghouse, who am I buying FROM? Anyone in the market? Only other Wells Fargo accounts? Only the clearinghouse of the relevant exchange (NYSE's if I buy a NYSE stock)?
