That's kind of my point, it's a total market fund so it aims to own everything. It's spreading out risk but I don't know how many of those tinier companies are actually shit that's going to tank.

The point with that kind of investing is you have a job and keep buying. When it tanks, it's just an opportunity to buy more. It's also generally used in 60/40 portfolios, but most of us hate bonds. However that would've protected you fairly well from this downturn, especially if you're older and have been adjusting accordingly.

Weelllllllllll etf's like SPY are also index funds, but it doesn't really matter. I don't think your perspective on stocks is super helpful though, unless the global economy will truly never recover.
