Here's the difference. In the past (for example, the anti-war protests of the 1960's), the protesters wanted the system to change, but they wanted the country/system to continue.

That's not the case now. These days, we have very well funded elements whose goal is the outright destruction of the US. Not the dirty-kitchen variety we had in the 60's, but well-organized groups with a fairly well organized plan.

Whether it is the acceleration that we hear about, or something darker, it is still moving in a definite direction.

For example... when in history was there ever a chance that a socialist could become president? And now, we have at least a few running for the nomination of one party.
