My parents are not beatniks. They helped me get a great deal on my house by finding a property with an artificially-low price because it was only available to low-income homebuyers, which I technically am because I'm in grad school.
When I applied someone at whatever Democrat-run local credit union wrote me a long, emotional plea (which I still haven't read in full) to not take advantage of a program intended for local working families. My mom just said "the law says a low income is the only qualification. People never leave money on the table. If the dumb lawmakers ever set foot in an econ class they'd have known this would happen."
So now I live in one of the rooms while renting out the other two to the point where I actually make profit, benefiting and contributing to 'gentrification.' So I definitely put a high priority on getting rich, it's just that I wouldn't outright break the rules or try to contest a will to make more money.
By the way, if the US does go to shit, where would you move? I'm thinking of working in Germany or if possible Switzerland when I graduate, but after that I have no clue.

Not entirely true but not entirely false either.
You'll obviously be miserable working a shit job just to make it to the end of the month with zero savings.
On the other hand, if you are skilled and lucky enough to get enough extra income with something that doesn't make you want to kill yourself, you'll eventually reach a point where money is just "there" and you have too much of it. Unless you become a super consoomer that buys expensive shit just for the sake of it then you'll eventually try to find entertainment through other means like hobbies, family, friends or travelling.
