I've heard about you mercury dude. It's amazing how much stuff in science is "how did you think of that" tier. In my neck of the woods, surface plasmon resonance. Quite literally, the surface atoms of some metal are "vibing" with light going through?by?over? (who the fuck knows) them. Or the numerous characterization methods like nucleur magnetic resonance, or electron pair resonance, or fucking Mossbauer spectroscopy. The whole "it came to me in a dream" thing is more or less acceptable at a certain level of chemistry.
